Green Schools – Biodiversity Theme.

7 June 2023

This past year The Green Schools Committee have been tackling the theme of Biodiversity.

We need to now make a massive effort to protect and support biodiversity as it is essential to life on Earth.

Without a wide range of animals, plants and micro organisms, we cannot have the healthy ecosystems that we rely on to provide us with the air we breathe and the food we eat .

Please see attached a selection of photos showing the planting that took place and a display outlining the importance of bees.

At Naas CBS we have worked to inform our school community of the importance of Biodiversity through displays, quizzes, treasure hunts and we currently keep bees.

We have also engaged students in a range of planting activities including the planting of sunflowers around the school to attract pollinators such as bees and birds.

Next year we plan to engage in a number of gardening activities to further support Biodiversity at Naas CBS and in our wider community.

As a community we can work to support biodiversity, so consider attracting a variety of insects and pollinators, especially bees to your gardens this summer by planting a range of flowers rich in pollen and nectar.

Perennial plants are great along with flowering annuals and bedding plants.

Top tips for growing a pollinator – friendly garden:

1 Go Native

2 Avoid chemicals and pesticides

3 Embrace wild and mix it up. You can also help our bees thrive by supporting local beekeepers by purchasing local honey
